I don't know about you, but I have heard the phrase, "The Entitlement Generation" thrown around to describe this up and coming generation. By the name I speculate that the idea behind it is that this generation seems to think that something is owed to them by the world. The reasons why a person thinks they deserve certain things vary I'm sure. In my previous post, I mention one incident I saw on tv that really started me down this thought process of "deserving". (for more info on the "entitlement generation" here is a decent news article.)
Honestly, I don't think this is a new concept. The phrase, "he received his just desserts" has been around for quite some time. Which makes me think it goes deeper than the particular way the last of the baby boomers have raised their children. Not that parents cannot have positive or negative effects on their children, but I do see selfishness for what it is and would entertain that selfishness may just look different in each generation.
I think I'm going to use the next couple posts and share my thoughts on what is deserved and that which is undeserved.
The first two will probably be about "What we deserve from God" and "What other people deserve from us."

I have spent a good deal of time thinking about this very subject, although with a different perspective. I, and I think I am not alone, find myself steeped in discontentment with my current job situation. I have tried to determine the source of said discontentment and have come up with the following expectation. In this the information age, we tend to hear about every 20-something millionaire, every 17-year-old kid who developed a new software program that is now a multi-millionaire. We are bombarded with success stories and half-stories that only show the post-success profile. The Apprentice and shows like it have us believe that some people are idiots, but if you work hard enough, you can be a millionaire. It's not that we're not willing to work, but I know that no matter how hard I work at my current job, I'm not going to be a millionaire in the next 3 years, though I ganuinely believe that I am capable of making seven figures. I have bought what reality t.v. is selling. I just don't know what my outlet is. So the bottom line is that I am unhappy, but too much of a wuss to do anything about, so I just sit and stew. Call it entitlement if you want, I think that in this "Information Age", it's easy to develop an unbalanced perspective.
